"Allow it to happen. Don't make it happen."
"It's not just talent that makes you a good rider, but persistence and keeping at it when things get tough. In riding you have to focus on what you want to happen instead of on what you're afraid might happen....If someone doesn't understand something, it's not his or her fault. When people are trying hard, I'll help them as much as they want me to help them so we can get the job accomplished....People learn in different ways. I try to choose the way that works best fo reach individual horse and/or rider..." (interview by Amber Heintzberger) Teaching Philosphy Emphasis on Balance "If you can't sit on your horse [in balance], you can't ride your horse...No matter what you're doing on a horse, if you're not in balance, then neither is your horse. I try to get everything to be as light as possible...to get the horse and rider to work together with as little effort as possible. ...Breathing, balance and visualization, which, important as they are for skiing [and other sports] are even more important to riding because you are dealing with anothe living being." (interview with A.H.) Experience Now resident in North Carolina, richard grew up in Woodstock, VT and helped his family run a horse farm and riding camp with 80 horses and winter ski lodge.
